More about the Cres-Osor Statute:

The Cres-Osor Statute includes enacted and written provisions from 1409 to 1608. In 1640, the provisions were arranged and classified into four books (chapters). The Statute was printed in Venice in 1640 in the Venetian dialect of the Italian language. That is why it is sometimes inaccurately cited as a statute from 1640.

The name Cres-Osor Statute refers to Cres as the place of compilation and publication. Osor is the historical name for both islands – Cres and Lošinj, with smaller neighboring islands where provisions of the Statute applied.

The text of the Statute was prepared by a commission whose work was approved by the entire island community. In the commission was the duke of the island, Jakov Dolfin, with two nobles and commoners from Cres and one nobleman and a commoner from Osor, Lubenice, and Beli, which indicated a particular democratic procedure.
