On Thursday, March 13th, 2025 at 17:00 PM (CET), we are hosting the CAS SEE Seminar with Miloš Popović on Mapping for Impact: Unleash Spatial Stories that Drive Change in conversation with the RECAS Fellow Eleni Oikonomaki.

Miloš Popović

Milos Popovic, PhD – a passionate GIS and data visualization enthusiast. As the creator of “milos-makes-maps,” he empowers geospatial professionals and curious beginners alike with over 70 free video tutorials on mapping with R. He loves using R to create maps that make sense of big data, transforming raw data into stunning visualizations that drive real-world insights.

About the Seminar

Miloš Popović will explore how maps transform raw data into powerful stories that drive change in local communities. Through a creative process involving three key projects, Popović delves into environmental challenges and reveals actionable insights for decision-makers:

  • Visualizing Tree Cover Loss: This project sets the stage by highlighting environmental shifts and urban sprawl, providing a clear picture of what’s at stake.
  • 3D Interactive Maps with NASA FIRMS: Building on the first project, we delve into the impact of fire events on tree cover loss.
  • Advanced 3D Mapping with NASA FIRMS: Explore a deeper layer of analysis with advanced techniques using the same NASA FIRMS data, unlocking further insights into environmental dynamics and informing smarter urban planning.
