The Rule of Law in Brazil: the Legal Construction of Inequality
On Thursday, March 3rd at 12 pm (CET), we hosted CAS SEE Weekly Seminar with Juliano Zaiden Benvindo, presented by our Fellow Gabriel Rezende de Souza Pinto.
In the context of a rising crisis of liberal principles and democratic decay in global constitutionalism, how can a country like Brazil, a young democracy struggling with a long history of extractive institutions, deal with a widespread authoritarian mindset? In this lecture, professor Juliano Zaiden Benvindo presents his forthcoming book The Rule of Law in Brazil: the Legal Construction of Inequality (Hart, 2022). This new work not only provides a broad perspective on the evolution and functioning of the rule of law in Brazil, but also gives a clear sense of what is at stake in defending democratic institutions against authoritarian assaults.
Juliano Zaiden Benvindo is Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Brasília in Brazil and Research Fellow at the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development.
