 Description:

This essay examines the identities, transnational ties and engagement of young Serbian and Croatian migrants in the United States. Based on a survey, interviews and relevant literature, it shows that many participants maintain strong emotional, personal and financial connections with their countries of origin. Their identities often extend across national borders, creating a sense of belonging “here and there.” Although formal political participation is limited, migrants share ideas and comparative perspectives through everyday exchanges with family and friends. The essay argues that migration policies should better recognise these sustained cross-border ties and the potential contribution of transmigrants.
