The populist upsurge in contemporary liberal societies. Implications for constitutional democracy

The project intends to define populism from a multilateral perspective: Firstly, populism will be defined under a purely political stance; secondly its impact on the constitutional asset of contemporary democracy will be investigated.

Finally, the project aims at confronting populist approach to constitutionalism with popular and political models of constitutionalism theorized by authors such as Richard Bellamy, Jeremy Waldron, Mark Tushnet and Larry Kramer.

Thus, the aim of this project will be focused on the theoretical discussion about populism by challenging it from three angles: its political and social stance; its most peculiarly constitutional connotation; its relationship with these two alternative models – popular and political ones – and their critique to liberal legal constitutionalism.
