Exhibition: “Island Relations”
Dates: September 12 – October 2
Title: ‘Island Relations’ exhibition at Moise Palace, Cres
Opening event September 11, 9pm
Islands are often pictured as worlds apart, with distinct ways of life at the edges of nations. Looking closer, they reveal themselves as sites of entanglement, where all manner of things meet, clash and transform. The trending study of ‘islandness’ offers a way into some of today’s most pressing questions, including migration, digital transformation and sustainability.
Island Relations invites visitors to consider islands as places where the specific and the shared constantly speak to one another. It brings together three creative research projects that move within and between island worlds, from the social and physical infrastructures of Cyprus’ migrant reception system (Ana Ricchiardi) and the digital storytelling of cultural heritage institutions of small Mediterranean islands (Federica Di Biase) to the planetary wellbeing narratives of a European network of dark sky island communities (Dominique van de Klundert, YUFE Postdoctoral Fellow, Center for Advanced Studies Southeast Europe).
Each project becomes a way of understanding how preservation and innovation, bordering and mobility and justice and belonging play out across contexts and scales: material and immaterial, local and global, lived and imagined. Island relations reach beyond fixed borders to recognise that island histories and lives are plural, intersecting and often differ from what common narratives assume.
We warmly invite you to join us for the opening event and throughout the exhibition period to tune into the many relations that continue to shape life on and research about islands.
