CAS SEE Seminars with Guests: Lura Limani

On Thursday, July 8th at 10 am (CET), we hosted CAS SEE Weekly Seminar with Lura Limani, presented by our fellow Bojan Bilić. The seminar is entitled: “Tracing Kosovo’s Trans History ”.

Since the early 2000s, when a loosely organized LGBTQ movement emerged in Kosovo, queer activist efforts have focused on sexuality rather than gender. The public coming out of two trans activists in 2016/2017 made way for the discussion about the legal right to change one’s gender identification and access gender confirmation services. However, while their appearance has marked a turn for the contemporary movement, it would be wrong to assume that it also marks the beginning of trans visibility in Kosovo. Research into local media coverage of trans individuals shows that what is often hailed as a ‘historic first’ may not necessarily be so. This perpetual ‘novelty’ implies an erasure of queer history and is indicative of the need for a knowledge production that reclaims ignored and forgotten narratives of queerness.

Lura Limani is a writer, editor, and researcher based in Prishtina, Kosovo. With an extensive background in journalism and research, Limani previously worked as the editor-in-chief of Prishtina Insight, an online magazine produced by BIRN Kosovo. She holds an MA in cultural studies from University of Freiburg (Germany) and studied sociology and philosophy during her Bachelor studies at University of Prishtina and New York University. Previously, she was a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University in New York. Limani is one of the founders of the independent literary zine and publishing house Lirindja as well as the co-founder of the Kosovo Oral History Initiative, a live archive of life stories of people from Kosovo. Her previous research revolved around narratives of displacement, identity, youth culture and feminism. Together with Rina Krasniqi, Limani is the co-author of BOOM(2020), a publication chronicling Kosovo’s pop and rock scene in the 1980s.
