SUMMARY:Inaugural lecture: Selma Porobić
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural lecture by dr. Selma Porobić\nClassroom 801\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FFRI)\, University of Rijeka\nSveučilišna avenija 4\, 51000 Rijeka \nTITLE: Exploring the world through self-reflection: from analytical autoethnography to an integrative multimethod approach to studying war and forced migration \nAutoethnography is a method of autobiographical writing that allows researchers to investigate their own group or personal experiences\, critically examining cultural beliefs and practices. It values relationships and employs deep self-reflection to connect the self with society\, the specific with the general\, and the personal with the political. The primary goal often emphasises social justice\, showcasing how individuals and groups navigate decisions and understand challenges while highlighting emotion and creativity. In this class\, dr. Porobić will share her approach to analytic autoethnography as an epistemological tool for understanding forced migration through lived experience. This approach involves a constantly active self-reflective process\, which primarily leads to generating specific research questions and subsequently informs the choice of qualitative methods\, such as narrative interviews and participatory observations\, for data collection. Dr. Porobić will detail her researcher positionality using five case studies to reflect on the core tenets of the analytic autobiographical approach: being a full member of the research setting while also committing to theoretical understandings of the broader social context. These five case studies reflect 20 years of her transdisciplinary work on traumatology and forced migration\, highlighting diverse individual and community experiences through various gender and (trans)generational perspectives: i) three generations of exiled Tibetan women in India\, ii) complex trauma and resilience among Bosnian refugees in Sweden\, iii) returnees and post-war recovery in Bosnia\, iv) psychosocial well- being of war-displaced women in Bosnia\, Serbia\, and Kosovo\, and v) ongoing social trauma and peace education research in Ukraine. Although dr. Porobić have consistently utilised analytic ethnography in her research\, it has proven especially valuable in progressively developing an integrative multi-method approach to derive theory from empirical data and unveil the intricate realities of trauma and the long-term recovery process following forced migration\, which involves transactional dimensions across time and space. It has also deepened my understanding of the traumatology framework in relation to social institutions\, particularly the role of educational institutions in the aftermath of war and forced migration. This shift has redirected my research focus toward transformative justice (rather than transitional justice) and the role of peace education in helping us to engage with the lived experience of injustice by connecting the past to our present context awareness.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: ‘Indulging Kleptocracy’ and The Battle Against Transnational Enabling
DESCRIPTION: 20 May at 12.30h in the European Parliment Library\, Brussels\nREGISTRATION \nA new book published by Oxford University Press\, Indulging Kleptocracy: British Service Providers\, Postcommunist Elites\, and the Enabling of Corruption\, offers a detailed examination of how Western professionals—including lawyers\, accountants\, and PR agents—have facilitated the rise of postcommunist kleptocrats. Co-authored by John Heathershaw\, Tena Prelec\, and Tom Mayne\, the book focuses on the UK as a key hub for these enabling networks\, drawing on case studies from countries such as Russia\, Kazakhstan\, and Azerbaijan. \nThe event will also explore wider themes including corrosive capital—investments that exploit and deepen governance vulnerabilities—and the EU’s role in both addressing and\, at times\, perpetuating these flows. Insights will be shared from the EU-funded GEO-POWER-EU Horizon Europe project\, which examines the EU’s geopolitical influence in regions such as the Western Balkans\, Ukraine\, Moldova\, and Georgia. \nAn expert panel will bring together representatives from research\, journalism\, and civil society: \n\nJohn Heathershaw (Exeter)\, Tena Prelec (UniRi) and Tom Mayne (Exeter) – book authors\nSonja Stojanović Gajić (UniRi) – on corrosive capital and geopolitical competition in the EU’s neighbourhood\nAlexandra Gillies (OCCRP) – on investigative journalism’s role in fighting back against transnational corruption\n\nThe discussion will focus on transnational enabling—highlighting the intersections between international finance\, legal service provision\, and reputation management—and how cross-sectoral collaboration can help build accountability ecosystems and resistance strategies. \nThis event is part of a broader effort to understand and map enabler networks using big data\, investigative reporting\, and contextual analysis\, in order to challenge and reform the systems that allow kleptocracy to thrive. \n \n

SUMMARY:Archiving from Below - Seminar with Rosemary Grennan
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will explore the idea of “archiving from below” and how it can inform practices for building counter-archives. It will draw on the historical trajectories of community archiving\, workers’ enquiry\, and history from below\, as well as contemporary ideas about how community archives can challenge the widespread assault on collective memory. \nDrawing on her work at the MayDay Rooms\, Rosemary Grennan will outline key practices around how they archive\, digitise and disseminate their collections. Highlighting the primacy of use over preservation\, grassroots collecting\, archiving as counter-surveillance\, the role of archives as social and organising spaces\, and how the practice of digitisation can build solidarities across geographies. \nFor Peace\, an archive and exhibition project that reframes peace and anti-militarist movements by examining their material histories within our increasingly militarised world. And secondly Leftovers\, a digital platform that reimagines digital archives as collaborative resources for contemporary movements rather than static repositories of historical material. It explores how the platform prioritises active reuse of historical materials\, innovative categorisation methods\, and “sisterly archive” networks that enable digitisation exchange and mutual backup. \n  \nBIO:\nRosemary Grennan has co-run the MayDay Rooms since 2015\, an archive and educational space in London that seeks to connect histories and documents of social movements and resistance to contemporary struggles. More recently she has co-founded AGIT in Berlin\, a public residency space that works on archives and histories of social and labour movements.\nShe is currently a Research Fellow at the Centre for Digital Anthropology at University College London\, and was recently a fellow at the Sloane Lab as part of the Information Studies Department at UCL\, with the project entitled Collections of Collections: Building Common Ownership and Shared Archival Practices.\nShe recently contributed to the volume Archiving Activism in a Digital Age from the Institute of Network Cultures\, as well as having edited a number of books and contributed to non-academic journals and magazines on the politics of archiving.

SUMMARY:Inaugural lecture: Katarina Kušić
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural lecture by dr. Katarina Kušić\nClassroom 801\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FFRI)\, University of Rijeka\nSveučilišna avenija 4\, 51000 Rijeka \nTITLE: Ethnographic Research in Political Science and International Relations \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Kušić will present the debates and uses of ethnographic methods and methodologies in political science and international relations. Although these academic disciplines are often associated with “high” and “formal” politics\, they also contain a rich ethnographic tradition that examines the everyday manifestations and transformations of state and international politics. \nThe lecture is divided into two parts. In the first part\, Dr. Kušić will introduce ethnography as part of the broader field of qualitative and interpretive (reflexive) methodologies in political science and international relations. In the second part\, Dr. Kušić will illustrate the political and analytical potential of the ethnographic approach through examples from their own research.

SUMMARY:Inaugural lecture: Filip Ejdus
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural lecture by dr. Filip Ejdus\nClassroom 302\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FFRI)\, University of Rijeka\nSveučilišna avenija 4\, 51000 Rijeka \nTITLE: Student protests in Serbia \nThis presentation examines the ongoing student protests in Serbia and how they have challenged the country’s increasingly authoritarian regime. Instead of relying on leaders and centralized structures\, the protests use direct democracy and plenums to deliberate and make collective decisions. Ideologically\, they unite around a shared “minimum”: the rejection of corruption and authoritarianism\, and the demand for rule of law\, democracy\, and accountability. The talk explores how this horizontal\, decentralized\, and depersonalized approach compares to other youth-led movements around the world\, why it has proven effective in Serbia\, and what challenges lie ahead.

SUMMARY:Jelena Jureša: Choreographies of Violence
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art presents Choreographies of Violence\, the first major solo exhibition by Jelena Jureša in Croatia\, bringing together an overview of her recent film\, video\, and video installation works. In her practice\, Jelena Jureša explores questions of identity\, the politics of memory and forgetting\, the relationship between observer and observed\, and the (im)possibilities of visual representation. By investigating the complex relations between collective memory and political responsibility\, Jureša’s artistic practice examines the ways in which history is reflected and reproduced within contemporary society. \nThe exhibition Choreographies of Violence brings together four works installed in the museum’s large central halls as immersive audiovisual installations that create poetics and politics of moving images between the documentary and the performative\, completely transforming the exhibition space. These include the new experimental film and video installation Don’t Take It Personally (2025)\, the experimental film Ubundu (2019)\, and the monumental and complex work Aphasia (2019) – a feature-length film essay structured in three chapters that also develops into a multi-channel installation documenting the eponymous multimedia performance (Aphasia\, Score for Monitors\, 2025). Most of the works are being shown in Croatia for the first time. \nJelena Jureša is a visual artist. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Belgium\, Austria\, Croatia\, Serbia\, Slovenia\, Greece\, Italy\, France\, and the United States. Recent international exhibitions include the Manifesta Biennale (Pristina\, Kosovo); Contour Biennale (Mechelen\, Belgium); and the Industrial Art Biennale (Labin\, Croatia). Solo exhibitions include Argos Centre for Audiovisual Arts\, Brussels; kunstencentrum nona\, Mechelen; Künstlerhaus Graz; and the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade. Her films have been screened at FIDMarseille\, DocLisboa\, Ji.hlava\, Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin\, Cinematek Brussels\, and the Artists’ Cinema at the Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb. She has participated in artist residencies in Paris\, Hyde Park Art Center in Chicago\, MQ21 in Vienna\, and Kamov Residency in Rijeka. She holds a PhD from Ghent University and the KASK Conservatory\, where she teaches. Born in Novi Sad (SFRY)\, she lives and works in Ghent\, Belgium. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a program of talks\, workshops\, and screenings\, as well as a forthcoming publication realized in collaboration with CAS – Center for Advanced Studies of Southeastern Europe\, University of Rijeka. \nEducation: Ivana Golob Mihić\, Ana ŽarkovićDesign: Maša Poljanec\, OazaCover photo: Jelena Jureša\, Aphasia\, 2019\, video still \nThe exhibition is supported by the City of Rijeka\, the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia\, and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

SUMMARY:Panel discussion: Is There Such a Thing as a Neutral Image?
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion “Is There Such a Thing as a Neutral Image?”\, organized by the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Rijeka\, will take place on February 12\, 2026\, at the MMSU\, starting at 5:00 PM. Moderated by Ervin Pavleković\, the discussion brings together contributors to the edited volume Against the Neutral Image – Francesca Raimondi\, Maria Hlavajova\, Shahram Khosravi\, Branka Benčić (curator of the exhibition)\, and Sanja Bojanić – alongside artist Jelena Jureša and publication designer Ana Labudović\, opening a shared space for dialogue between artistic\, curatorial\, and theoretical perspectives. \nThe publication Against the Neutral Image (University of Rijeka) is not conceived as a conventional exhibition catalogue. Departing from the film works of Jelena Jureša\, it opens up a space of encounter between artistic\, curatorial\, and theoretical practices\, and develops questions about how violence is made visible or invisible\, how it is framed\, aestheticized\, normalized\, or suppressed. Through its texts\, the book insists on the thesis that the neutrality of the image is never merely a style of representation\, but is often a technique of power: an arrangement of distance\, attention\, and responsibility. \nThe panel discussion continues the logic of the publication itself as a “space of encounter\,” extending its questions through dialogue and exchange\, rather than treating the book or the exhibition as a closed entity. The discussion will address the relationship between image and institution\, aesthetics and ethics\, as well as the role of exhibitionary and discursive frameworks in shaping the ways we look at\, understand\, and (fail to) respond to violence. \nProject partners:MMSU Rijeka\, Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Rijeka\, KASK & Conservatorium / HOGENT Arts Research Fund
