SUMMARY:The European Face of Political Epistemology 2.0
DESCRIPTION:For the second consecutive year\, the conference “The European Face of Political Epistemology 2.0” brought together around twenty philosophers\, political scientists\, sociologists\, and other scholars in the beautiful Renaissance Moise Palace in Cres. In a stimulating academic atmosphere\, they discussed contemporary topics in political epistemology\, ranging from trust in experts and institutions to the cognitive value of democracy and epistemic injustice. Alongside invited speakers\, including Miranda Fricker\, Jennifer Lackey\, Michel Croce\, and Lisa Herzog\, numerous future collaborations were agreed upon. After the conference\, a doctoral workshop was held with Miranda Fricker\, where doctoral candidates from the postgraduate program “Philosophy and Contemporaneity” presented their papers and received valuable feedback.

SUMMARY:Inaugural lecture: Looking and Being Seen: John Berger’s Philosophy of Visual Culture
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural lecture by dr. Valeria Graziano\nClassroom 138\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FFRI)\, University of Rijeka\nSveučilišna avenija 4\, 51000 Rijeka \nThis week three lecture introduces students to John Berger’s unique vision within the Introduction to Visual Culture module\, curated by Dr. Boris Ruzić. The course begins with foundational thinkers to ground students in critical visual theory\, with Berger positioned to illuminate the ways images shape human experience and perception. Grounded in Ways of Seeing and other key works\, the lecture will investigate the political\, emotional\, and cultural dimensions of images\, especially the power dynamics in “the gaze”—who gets to look and who is looked at—in representations of gender\, class\, and the natural world. Moving from art to media\, we will delve into how images shape emotions and social behavior\, touching on empathy\, voyeurism\, and identification across mediums. Berger’s empathy for animals and critiques of industrialized society offer a lens to reconsider our visual relationship with animals and nature\, examining how modern visual culture often detaches humans from the natural world.

SUMMARY:Inaugural lecture: Selma Porobić
DESCRIPTION:Inaugural lecture by dr. Selma Porobić\nClassroom 801\, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FFRI)\, University of Rijeka\nSveučilišna avenija 4\, 51000 Rijeka \nTITLE: Exploring the world through self-reflection: from analytical autoethnography to an integrative multimethod approach to studying war and forced migration \nAutoethnography is a method of autobiographical writing that allows researchers to investigate their own group or personal experiences\, critically examining cultural beliefs and practices. It values relationships and employs deep self-reflection to connect the self with society\, the specific with the general\, and the personal with the political. The primary goal often emphasises social justice\, showcasing how individuals and groups navigate decisions and understand challenges while highlighting emotion and creativity. In this class\, dr. Porobić will share her approach to analytic autoethnography as an epistemological tool for understanding forced migration through lived experience. This approach involves a constantly active self-reflective process\, which primarily leads to generating specific research questions and subsequently informs the choice of qualitative methods\, such as narrative interviews and participatory observations\, for data collection. Dr. Porobić will detail her researcher positionality using five case studies to reflect on the core tenets of the analytic autobiographical approach: being a full member of the research setting while also committing to theoretical understandings of the broader social context. These five case studies reflect 20 years of her transdisciplinary work on traumatology and forced migration\, highlighting diverse individual and community experiences through various gender and (trans)generational perspectives: i) three generations of exiled Tibetan women in India\, ii) complex trauma and resilience among Bosnian refugees in Sweden\, iii) returnees and post-war recovery in Bosnia\, iv) psychosocial well- being of war-displaced women in Bosnia\, Serbia\, and Kosovo\, and v) ongoing social trauma and peace education research in Ukraine. Although dr. Porobić have consistently utilised analytic ethnography in her research\, it has proven especially valuable in progressively developing an integrative multi-method approach to derive theory from empirical data and unveil the intricate realities of trauma and the long-term recovery process following forced migration\, which involves transactional dimensions across time and space. It has also deepened my understanding of the traumatology framework in relation to social institutions\, particularly the role of educational institutions in the aftermath of war and forced migration. This shift has redirected my research focus toward transformative justice (rather than transitional justice) and the role of peace education in helping us to engage with the lived experience of injustice by connecting the past to our present context awareness.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: ‘Indulging Kleptocracy’ and The Battle Against Transnational Enabling
DESCRIPTION: 20 May at 12.30h in the European Parliment Library\, Brussels\nREGISTRATION \nA new book published by Oxford University Press\, Indulging Kleptocracy: British Service Providers\, Postcommunist Elites\, and the Enabling of Corruption\, offers a detailed examination of how Western professionals—including lawyers\, accountants\, and PR agents—have facilitated the rise of postcommunist kleptocrats. Co-authored by John Heathershaw\, Tena Prelec\, and Tom Mayne\, the book focuses on the UK as a key hub for these enabling networks\, drawing on case studies from countries such as Russia\, Kazakhstan\, and Azerbaijan. \nThe event will also explore wider themes including corrosive capital—investments that exploit and deepen governance vulnerabilities—and the EU’s role in both addressing and\, at times\, perpetuating these flows. Insights will be shared from the EU-funded GEO-POWER-EU Horizon Europe project\, which examines the EU’s geopolitical influence in regions such as the Western Balkans\, Ukraine\, Moldova\, and Georgia. \nAn expert panel will bring together representatives from research\, journalism\, and civil society: \n\nJohn Heathershaw (Exeter)\, Tena Prelec (UniRi) and Tom Mayne (Exeter) – book authors\nSonja Stojanović Gajić (UniRi) – on corrosive capital and geopolitical competition in the EU’s neighbourhood\nAlexandra Gillies (OCCRP) – on investigative journalism’s role in fighting back against transnational corruption\n\nThe discussion will focus on transnational enabling—highlighting the intersections between international finance\, legal service provision\, and reputation management—and how cross-sectoral collaboration can help build accountability ecosystems and resistance strategies. \nThis event is part of a broader effort to understand and map enabler networks using big data\, investigative reporting\, and contextual analysis\, in order to challenge and reform the systems that allow kleptocracy to thrive. \n \n
