Course Description

Throughout the history of philosophy, architecture has been widely referred to as a metaphor for conscious action and logical construction. For Aristotle the work of the master builder served as a metaphor for his philosophy of action, while Nietzsche used the metaphor of a “shaking tower of concepts” to visualize and make more comprehensible the precarious state of metaphysics. Yet architecture means much more to philosophy and critical thought than what the explanatory use of architectural imagery evokes. It was Kant who went beyond metaphor by claiming “architectonics is the art of systems”. As such, architecture is not only a cultural practice based on knowledge but moreover a cultural practice that serves the production of philosophical knowledge.

This course focuses on the double bind of architecture as a material practice and an agent of knowledge production. We will discuss the importance of architecture in the formation of thought. It will draw attention to architecture as a cultural practice between intellectual reason and sensual reason. It was Nietzsche who already emphasized the close interrelation between philosophy and architecture and insisted on the philosopher’s need for appropriate spaces for thinking. He held that after the death of God “we need some recognition of what above all is lacking in our big cities: quiet and wide, expansive places for reflection. Places with long, high-ceilinged cloisters for bad or all too sunny weather”.

The course will raise the consciousness for the fact that it is through architecture that the sensual and the cognitive are bound together. As much as it is a material and spatial practice, architecture is an intellectual practice enabling man to experience aspects of our world that are usually disconnected: intellectual reason and sensory reason. How do these “places for reflection” look like, and moreover what do we expect these spaces to look like today in the information age.

NOTE: Participants should prepare 20-minute-long presentations on topics of their research and allow a further 10 minutes for discussions following course descriptions. The titles of the presentations with short abstracts need to be sent following this link.

* ECTS points are available for MA and PhD students. The requirements for ECTS credits are (i) participation in at least 80% of all lectures, (ii) presentation of a previously prepared original paper on the topic of the course or discussion papers on the papers provided by lecturers. The organizers will prepare the official IUC certificate, which will include a detailed overview of the students’ obligations (sufficient for 3 ECTS). Whether ECTS will be recognized as parts of their academic programs or as additional achievements in diploma supplements depends solely on the institutions that the students come from.

Summer School Equality and Citizenship III – 2016

The Center for Advanced Studies of South East Europe, the University of Rijeka and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Rijeka are organizing a summer school on equality and citizenship from June 6th to June 10th, 2016, in Rijeka (Croatia). The summer school does not reproduce, in a diluted form, the familiar teaching format of a university course. Instead, it is organized around “Author-Meets-Critics” symposia dedicated to some distinguished authors’ publications and work-in-progress. All of the leading participants will give a paper on a topic on which they are working at the moment, and will reply to the papers given by scholars who participate in the symposia dedicated to them, and will be available for informal discussion.

Workshop Program: Generation On The Move

The 1990s had a long lasting impact on the children and youth of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, and Serbia, that can be seen nearly a quarter of a century after the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars. The experiences as well as the social and political view points of this generation will become the foundation of their roles performed in society and guide their decision-making process. Therefore research studies about the children from the last decade of the former-Yugoslavia will be an important task due to their effect on actual and prospective politics in this region. The aim of the workshop is to get a broad idea of the generation that lived their childhood and youth through the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s. Having now reached adulthood, the question of how this generation deals with their past, present and their future is raised. Though the organizers of the workshop focus on interdisciplinary studies, the essential target is to collect a variety of different approaches towards the generation’s identities, memories, attitudes and values, hopes and needs. We are investigating the generation’s opinions and habitus in terms of their individual and collective political, socio-economical and cultural situations, as well as towards Europe, the European Union and their neighbouring countries.

Seminar “How to Research Like a Dog: Kafka’s New Science”

This seminar will consist in a close reading of Kafka’s short story “Investigations of a Dog.” In this story we are presented with a brilliant and sometimes hilarious parody of scientific research and the norms that govern the production of knowledge, what Lacan called the “University discourse.” And indeed, if there is one word to describe today’s neoliberal management of the university with its proliferation of review mechanisms, corporate directives, and administrative layers, it is “Kafkaesque.” And yet Kafka was not only a prescient diagnostician of our hyper-bureaucratic times, but also the theorist of an alternative science, another way of thinking, even, perhaps, of a way out. Against the Kafkaesque neoliberal management of the university, the revolutionary studies of Kafka’s dog. What would be the kind of academy, the New University or enlightened institute of the future, that could accept the investigations of a dog as a veritable research program? What if we were to take the animal’s scholarly career, with its hallucinatory visions, paradoxical speculations, and extreme self-experimentation, seriously? In the guise of writing about a lone canine’s attempts to come to grips with his peculiarities and those of his world—that is, in chronicling the thinker’s dogged pursuit of his alienation, his incapacity to “live in harmony with my people and accept in silence whatever disturbs the harmony”—, Kafka comes closest to giving us his philosophical manifesto.

Aaron Schuster received his BA from Amherst College (USA), where he specialized in legal theory, and MA and PhD in Philosophy from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium). His doctoral dissertation, The Trouble With Pleasure: Philosophy and Psychoanalysis, examined the concept of pleasure in the history of philosophy, concluding with Freud and Lacan. He was a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie in 2005-2006, and has taught at PARTS (Performing Arts Research Training Studios) in Brussels. He is a currently the theory instructor at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. In addition to lectures and publications focusing on 20th century continental philosophy, he has written on contemporary art and culture for Cabinet, Metropolis M, Frieze, and others, and has collaborated as a writer with artists on a number of projects and performances.

Lecture “Economic Development and Ethnopolitics. Study of Dependency”

Contemporary research approaches to ethnicity tend to perceive them through prisms of either political and institutional frameworks, widely understood protection or abuses of human (and minority) rights, or cultural and anthropological issues. This research project proposes a less popular approach that combines ethnicity with economy and in this sense refers to the critical theory. By referring to domestic and international economic features, such as dynamics of agro-, trade-, and economic cycles, cultural division of labour within the given society and subsequently existing socio-economic inequalities and their consequences, this project will cast new light on mechanisms and institutions of ethnopolitics.

Along this, Jan Muś held a lecture in the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences on the subject of Economic development and etnopolitics in the 19th century.

jan_musJan Muś works as an adjunct at the Institute of East-Central Europe (IESW) and as a lecturer at the Catholic University of Lublin. His research interest concerns nationalism and ethnopolitics as well as the contemporary political and social developments in the Southeastern Europe. Jan’s project at the CAS SEE combines economic development and ethnopolitical claims in culturally plural societies of the Hapsburg and the Ottoman empires and in this sense it refers to the critical theory. It aims at further development of theoretical framework on ethnicity and nationalism by studying dependency between economic development and rise of nationalism. The intention is to render this practice traditional for the summer school.

The summer school is primarily directed to post-doc and doctoral participants. Post-doc and doctoral participants can contribute to the discussion by commenting and asking questions, as well as with 5-10 minute discussions in the workshops. Post-doc and doctoral participants will receive a certificate of participation that describes the activities in which they have participated at the summer school.
